The Digital Guillotine
Finally, I logged into the HR portal for Vertex Dynamics. I navigated to the box labeled Chief Executive Officer: Liam Sterling.
For a fraction of a second, my finger hovered over the trackpad. This was the man I had married. The man I had secretly funded, placing him on a pedestal of corporate power because I believed his ambition was matched by his heart. I had chosen to remain in the shadows, running my global holding company under a proxy board, solely to let him shine. I had wanted him to feel like the king of his world.
But kings who treat their queens like peasants do not deserve their crowns.
I clicked Edit. Status: Terminated. Reason Code: Gross Misconduct and Breach of Executive Ethics. Effective: Immediately.
I hit confirm. A small green checkmark appeared on the screen, sealing his professional fate.
But I wasn’t finished. I opened my private banking portal. Liam and I had “joint” accounts, but the reality was that every cent flowing into those accounts was a monthly dividend from my private trust. Liam believed it was his exorbitant CEO salary. I clicked on the user authorization tab, highlighted Liam’s name, and selected Revoke All Privileges.
The house—a sprawling eight-bedroom estate in the hills—was legally owned by one of my shell LLCs. The Tesla he drove, the country club membership he flaunted, the premium platinum credit cards burning a hole in his tailored suit pocket—all of it belonged to the “Owner.” All of it belonged to the bloated, exhausted woman he had just banished to the alleyway.
With a final, satisfying keystroke, I closed my laptop. Beside me on the pristine king-sized hotel bed, the twins, Leo and Maya, were sleeping peacefully. They were perfect. They were worth every stretch mark, every sleepless night, and every ounce of the physical toll pregnancy had taken on me. I kissed their warm foreheads, feeling a profound sense of peace wash over me. The tears I thought I would shed for my broken marriage never came. Instead, my veins hummed with the cold, electric current of liberation.
The Fall of the False King
I poured myself a glass of sparkling water, walked over to the floor-to-ceiling window of the penthouse suite, and opened an encrypted application on my phone. It was the security feed for the Vertex Dynamics corporate network, which included the venue where the gala was currently being held.
I tapped into the grand ballroom camera.
Liam was holding court at the center of the room, looking impossibly arrogant. Standing entirely too close to him was Chloe from Marketing, laughing at whatever joke he was telling the board of directors. I watched as Liam enthusiastically flagged down a sommelier, pointing to a vintage bottle of champagne on the reserve list. It was a $5,000 bottle. A celebratory flex to impress the executives he thought he commanded.
The sommelier brought the bottle and presented the leather billfold. Liam, without breaking eye contact with Chloe, slipped his black platinum card onto the tray.
Two minutes later, the sommelier returned. He leaned in, whispering discreetly into Liam’s ear.
Even through the silent security feed, I could see the exact moment the humiliation hit him. Liam’s confident smile faltered. His face flushed a deep, violent shade of crimson. He snatched the card back, patting his pockets frantically before pulling out a secondary card. He handed it over with a forced, tight smile.
A minute later, the sommelier returned again, shaking his head apologetically. The board members were staring. Chloe took a slight, awkward step back. Liam, now visibly sweating, had to ask the CFO of the company to cover the tab, laughing nervously as if it were a simple banking glitch.
I smiled, taking a sip of my water. Just wait, Liam.
I switched the feed to the VIP parking garage. Twenty minutes later, Liam stormed into the concrete structure, his face twisted in fury. He marched up to his matte-black Tesla and yanked the door handle. It didn’t budge. He pulled out his phone, tapping aggressively on the screen, trying to trigger the remote unlock. The headlights remained dark. The car was a dead, locked brick of metal.
He kicked the tire in a fit of rage, nearly falling over in his expensive Italian loafers. Finally, defeated, he hailed a standard yellow cab.
The Locked Gates
It was 1:43 AM when the notifications on my phone began to erupt.
-
Liam (1:45 AM): Ava, did you do something to the bank accounts? Both of my cards declined at the gala. It was incredibly embarrassing.
-
Liam (1:52 AM): Where are you? The Tesla app logged me out. I had to take a cab like a peasant.
-
Liam (2:10 AM): Ava, I’m at the front gate. The passcode isn’t working. Open the gate right now.
-
Liam (2:15 AM): Ava, my keycode for the front door is completely erased. The biometric scanner is flashing red. Open this door immediately! I am freezing out here and my phone is at 2%. WHAT IS WRONG WITH YOU?
At 2:18 AM, my phone began to ring. I let it ring three times before swiping to answer.
“Ava!” Liam roared into the speaker, the sound of the harsh night wind whistling in the background. “Open this goddamn door right now! Have you lost your mind? Did you change the security codes?”
“I didn’t lose my mind, Liam,” I replied, my voice smooth, quiet, and completely devoid of emotion. “I simply followed your instructions.”
“What are you talking about?!” he yelled, pounding his fist against the heavy mahogany of the front door. I could hear the thud echoing through the receiver.
“You told me I was a liability,” I said calmly. “You told me I ruined your image. You told me to get out of your life and go hide. So, I did. I left. I just made sure to take all of my belongings with me.”
“Your belongings?” Liam spat, letting out a incredulous, bitter laugh. “This is my house, Ava! I am the CEO of Vertex Dynamics! I pay for this estate, I pay for those cars, and I pay for you to sit around looking like a mess! Open the door before I call the police and have you removed!”
“Call them,” I whispered.
“What?”
“Call the police, Liam. Tell them you are trespassing on a property owned by Vanguard Holdings LLC. Tell them you are trying to break into a home where you are no longer a resident. Let’s see how that looks for your precious image.”
“You’re crazy,” he breathed, the panic finally starting to crack through his anger. “Ava, stop playing games. I’m locked out. My cards are frozen. I have nowhere to go.”
“You could go ask Chloe in Marketing for a place to stay,” I suggested lightly. “I hear she runs marathons. I’m sure she has a very comfortable couch.”
“Ava, please—”
I hung up the phone and blocked his number.
The Boardroom Throne
The next morning, the sun rose over the city, casting a brilliant, golden light across the skyline. I woke up feeling reborn. I hired a highly recommended, premium nanny service to watch over Leo and Maya in the penthouse suite for the morning.
Then, I opened the garment bag I had instructed my assistant to deliver overnight.
I did not look like a “bloated dairy cow.” I slid into a custom-tailored, emerald-green power suit that hugged my postpartum curves perfectly, accentuating a body that had performed the miracle of creating two lives. I applied a sharp, flawless layer of makeup, pulling my messy hair back into a sleek, imposing chignon. I slipped on a pair of Christian Louboutin stilettos that cost more than Liam’s first car. When I looked in the mirror, I didn’t see the exhausted, beaten-down wife from the alleyway. I saw the billionaire chairwoman of Vanguard Holdings. I saw the apex predator.
A chauffeured Maybach awaited me downstairs. I stepped into the leather interior and instructed the driver to take me to the Vertex Dynamics headquarters.
When I stepped through the revolving glass doors of the grand lobby, the atmosphere shifted. The security guards, who were technically on my payroll, stood at attention. I walked directly to the private executive elevator and scanned my master biometric thumbprint.
Access Granted: Level 50. Boardroom.
When the elevator doors parted, I could hear the screaming before I even turned the corner.
“What do you mean I’m terminated?!” Liam was shouting, his voice echoing down the glass-walled corridor. “I am the CEO! You cannot fire me! I demand to speak to the Owner! Call the proxy board right now!”
I walked slowly down the corridor, the sharp click of my stilettos echoing against the marble floors, announcing my arrival. Liam was standing in the center of the glass-enclosed boardroom, red-faced, sweating, and wearing the same wrinkled tuxedo from the night before. He was surrounded by the HR Director, the Chief Legal Officer, and two burly security guards.
As I entered the room, the HR Director immediately stopped talking. He stepped back, straightened his posture, and bowed his head respectfully.
“Good morning, Madam Chairwoman,” the HR Director said clearly.
Liam froze. His head whipped around, his bloodshot eyes landing on me. For a moment, his brain simply could not process the visual information. He looked at my emerald suit, the posture of absolute authority, and the terrified respect the other executives were showing me.
“Ava?” Liam croaked, his voice cracking. “What… what are you doing here? How did you get up here?”
I walked to the head of the long mahogany table—the seat he usually occupied—and rested my fingertips on the leather backrest.
“I believe you demanded to speak to the Owner, Liam,” I said, my voice projecting effortlessly across the silent room. “I am here.”
Liam’s mouth opened and closed like a dying fish. “No. No, that’s impossible. The Owner is a foreign investment group… it’s Vanguard Holdings…”
“And who do you think owns Vanguard Holdings, Liam?” I asked, tilting my head, watching the devastating realization finally crash over him. “Did you really think you were promoted from a mid-level regional manager to a global CEO purely on your own merit? You were elevated because I placed you there. I bought this company, I funded your initiatives, and I stood in the shadows so you could feel like a titan.”
He stumbled backward, grabbing the edge of a chair for support. “Ava… you… you’re a billionaire?”
“I am,” I confirmed coldly. “And yesterday, I was perfectly content to let you play king. I was perfectly content to endure the exhaustion of motherhood without complaining, because I loved you. But then, you shoved me into a garbage-filled alley. You told me I was ugly. You told me I was a useless liability who ruined your image.”
I leaned forward, my eyes locking onto his terrified, trembling gaze.
“I am not a liability, Liam. I am the bank. And the bank is officially closed.”
“Ava, please,” Liam begged, the arrogance entirely stripped away, leaving a pathetic, sniveling shell of a man. Tears began to well in his eyes. “I didn’t mean it. I was stressed! The gala, the investors… I was drinking. You’re my wife! You’re the mother of my children!”
“And you are a terminated employee,” I stated, pulling a manila folder from my designer bag and tossing it onto the table. “Inside is your termination notice for gross misconduct. Next to it are the divorce papers. You will leave with exactly what you brought into this marriage: nothing. Your access to the corporate accounts is gone. Your access to my properties is gone. If you attempt to contact me outside of my legal counsel, I will crush whatever remains of your pathetic existence.”
I turned my gaze to the security guards. “Escort Mr. Sterling off the premises. Do not let him pack his office. Mail his personal items to whatever cheap motel he manages to afford.”
“Ava! Please! Don’t do this! I have nothing!” Liam screamed, reaching out for me as the guards grabbed him by the arms.
“Look at Chloe in Marketing,” I said, a cruel, satisfied smile touching my lips as they dragged him toward the elevator. “Maybe she can teach you how to run marathons. You’re going to need the stamina for the job hunt.”
I didn’t watch the elevator doors close. I turned back to the panoramic window, looking out over the city that belonged to me. I was a mother of twins. I was a powerhouse. And for the first time in a long time, the image I projected to the world was exactly the one I wanted.
